Power Play! Breakfasts at
Whitman Elementary
In February of this year, one of the SAY San Diego 6 to 6 Programs
decided to take Power Play one step further by introducing a Breakfast
Club. At Whitman Elementary, Site leader, Michelle Gianola, created
the WBC (Whitman Breakfast Club). A majority of her students were
arriving with fast food items and breakfast foods that were high in
sugar and she noticed that when she say them in the afternoon, they
were very tired and unfocused so she decided to start the WBC. The
breakfast program was well thought out and every student enrolled
in the morning program could begin to earn incentives for bringing
in healthy breakfast items. Every time an item from the WBC list
was brought in, children earned points (each food item had been
assigned a point value). As points were earned, the kids could earn
prizes such as Power Play! stickers, Power Play! pencils and the Kids
Get Cookin cook book. Once the student participated in an entire
week of healthy breakfasts, they would receive a raffle ticket
towards a gift card to Vons, Ralphs, Albertsons, or Henrys.
Michelle sent letters home to the parents expressing the importance
of eating a healthy breakfast. She highlighted one sentence for them
stating that It has been proven that children who eat a healthy
breakfast tend to focus better in school, achieve higher test scores,
and have fewer behavior problems. She also stressed that it is
imperative to fuel kids with the proper foods to help them effectively
get through the day. Along with contacting the parents, she went to
local businesses to garner some support and to ask for donations of
the gift cards. Michelle utilized everyone from her community; parents,
businesses, and even the kids to become Champions for Change at
Whitman Elementary! The WBC was one way that you could take Power
Play! to the next level!
