Summer Spectacular
at Lindbergh Schweitzer
Kudos to Lindbergh Schweitzer Elementary School in Linda Vista
for providing healthy snacks and food, and for getting their kids
physically active! In fact, they went well beyond their 60 minutes
of power play a day! Over the last year, Lindbergh Schweitzer used
the Children's Power Play! Program at both its sites. The school
has two after school programs which serves over two hundred children
ages six to twelve.. During their school program, they incorporated
Parent Workshops once a month. Parents of the youth were able to
come in for a few hours and take a nutrition class which taught them
how to prepare healthy recipes with fruits and vegetables But this
site did not stop there! They created an entire summer program that
focused on both nutrition and getting their kids physically active.
In the morning, the youth had free time where they would run around
outside before the heat was too much. Then from 9:45-10:15 am they
had “Let's Get Fit.” This was a fun time for the kids to participate
in an aerobic activity by following videos/DVDs such as Tae Bo or
Hip Hop Abs or staff led activities. All of their snacks throughout
the day were nutritious snacks, such as apple slices and peanut
butter or fruit smoothies to reinforce the importance of healthy
food choices. From 3:30-4:00 pm the youth participated in “Fitness,”
which was a structured time of physical activity that all kids
participated in. The major physical activity accomplishment was the
“Walk Across California” project. The site supervisor mapped out a
path along the playground that was about a ¼ mile walk. Kids would
track their progress every day and then chart it on a graph. The
goal was to walk the length of California. Kids were very excited
about this program and an entire bulletin board was designated for
this activity so youth would be able to see their progress.
Lindbergh Schweitzer was able to take the principles of the Power
Play! Program and create tons of physical activity opportunities
for their kids. This summer program exemplifies what a Power
Play! site should be…nutritious, active, and fun! Good Job! |
