Marvin Elementary Gets Healthy!

If you work with schools or after school programs, you know about Power Play!  If you have not been fortunate enough to experience it, Power Play! is a program which motivates and empowers youth 9-11 years old to eat 3 to 5 cups of fruits and vegetables and get at least 60 minutes of physical activity everyday.  It is a great program which a lot of San Diego County Schools and After School Programs have used.  The Programs receive a kit that includes 20 activities in it and the sites have to complete at least 5 activities to receive a Celebrity Cook Book for each participant.  Occasionally, there are sites that go above and beyond the minimum 5 activities.

Rebecca Willets, the Site Supervisor at Marvin Elementary 6 to 6 Program, is one of those leaders who took the program to another level.  In November, she had her students participate in an entire month based on Power Play!  She had a guest speaker, Larissa Johnson, the Community Youth Organization Coordinator , come to the site to conduct a Smoothie Demonstration for the youth and they completed two walking fieldtrips to local grocery stores, Albertsons and Windmill Farms.  The highlight of the month was a Stone Soup Parent Night where everyone played Power Bingo (an activity from the kit) and ate the community soup.  According to Rebecca, the kids and parents “loved it!”

Rebecca Willets and the Marvin Elementary 6 to 6 are Power Play! All-Stars!  Not only were the students participating in the Power Play! Program but they had parent involvement and utilized their community to show how important it is to eat fruits and vegetables and be active everyday.
