Live Like a Champion Tour 2008

This year started off with some wonderful opportunities for four Community Youth Organizations (CYOs) in San Diego county. The Center for Community Solutions, SAY San Diego, San Diego County Parks and Recreation Department and the East County YMCA all hosted the Blue Cross Live Like a Champion Tour at one of their sites. The tour was jam-packed with interactive games and challenging sports-themed activities to help children bring out their “inner champion.”

All of the CYOs that were chosen for this tour have been participating in the Network for a Healthy California’s Children’s Power Play! Campaign throughout the year. Their students have been learning the importance of eating 3 6 cups of fruits and vegetables and also particpating in at least 60 minutes of Power Play! every day. This message tied right in with the idea of “Living like a Champion.” To be a champion, children are encouraged to eat well, drink lots of water, turn off the television, and participate in tons of physical activity whether it be an organized sport or dancing around their room.

The tour was created by Blue Cross of California, in collaboration with the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. It traveled for fourteen weeks throughout the state to get children moving and empower them to make healthy lifestyle choices today and in the future and San Diego was the last stop on the tour. The appeal of the tour is that it invited children to engage in a number of activities, many which have been inspired by sports legends, such as WNBA star Lisa Leslie, NFL great Jerry Rice and World Cup Soccer champion Julie Foudy—all CHAMPIONS !

Living like a Champion is easy to do when the community works together to become Champions for Change! For more information on how to become a Champion For Change visit www.championsforchange.net.
