Walkability Audits

Over 50 percent of Latinos in California are overweight or obese.  These alarming statistics have prompted many to rally behind creating feasible solutions for curtailing obesity and overweight in the San Diego region.  In particular, the concept of a walkable community has been introduced  and promoted by Walk San Diego, with the idea that walking can improve the quality of life and health of all residents in the County. Walking is free, most everyone can do it, and it indicates community  safety and livability, as well as reducing pollution and increasing access to healthier foods.

Two walkability audits were conducted in National City to evaluate walkability to healthy foods in this community.  Community members conducted a walkability checklist as they walked through National City, evaluating how "walkable" the sidewalks are, and developing recommendation priorities for policy makers to address these walkability deterents.
Latino Campaign, in collaboration with the Mayor, Chief Police, city planners, community members, and Walk San Diego conducted a walkability audit in a neighborhood of National City on June 6, 2005.  Download the final walkability report of National City.
Latino Campaign, Walk San Diego, and the Old Town Neighborhood Council conducted a walkability audit in Old Town, National City, on August 20, 2005.  Download the final walkability report of Old Town.
